Help-For-Single-Moms: Education Improves Your Circumstances

Help For Single Moms – Education Improves Your Circumstances
By Samantha Gregory

If you are a new or experience single mom you know how hard it is to make ends meet. It may be a constant or occasional problem that’s made worse by having limited income opportunities. When I was a young single mom I worked for minimum wage. It was not enough to support me and my child so I had to find a way into better circumstances.

For me the best way to increase my income was to get better education. I had a 2-year degree but it was not enough for the kind of job I wanted. There are jobs that pay well with a 2-year degree or even a certificate, but that was not the case for me. I needed a 4-year degree so I began planning.

If you are not completely convinced that getting more education or a college degree is for you consider these tips. They will help you decide if going back to school is a good move for you.

Employment Advancement

Return to school to increase your job skills. You may already have good skills but adding a few more will make you more marketable. The job you want may require a set of skills you don’t have at the moment.

Better job skills usually mean an increase in pay. With a promotion you can expect an increase in your paycheck. Unless you are doing a lateral move into another department always expect a raise of several thousand dollars. Search for salary information on the many websites online.

Your employer may pay for training. In my current position my manager is eager for me to learn new skills. This will help the department become more efficient, save time, and save money. Be sure to ask if employer training is available. Check the employee manual or website for more information.

Most companies offer tuition reimbursement to employees. Typically you have to apply for financial aid or apply for loans and at the end of the quarter or semester the fees are reimbursed. You can use the money to repay your loans or pocket the money if you received grants or a scholarship.

Extra Money on the Side

Use your newly learned skills or old ones to make extra money in a home business. As long as your extra work after hours does not interfere with your regular job, you can make considerable income using your new skills. A part-time business is tax deductible.

Attend continuing educations courses for self-development. The more you learn about yourself and your job the better it is for you financially. Your resume will look better as well, so you have more opportunity to get into higher paying jobs. Never stop learning and growing in this life. You open yourself to greater opportunities when you continue the learning process.

Additional Advantages

As you go through school you will have access to the library. Take advantage of library resources. It is more than just books, but contains millions of resources for learning new things from cooking to finance. It is also the place for free entertainment. Check out movies; get access to online services such as e-books and courses, etc. Ask your librarian about what is available. They are a wealth of knowledge.

With the books and DVDs at the library you can learn how to do-it-yourself to save yourself money. If you can read you can do anything from repairing a leaky faucet to putting together your child’s dresser drawers.

Education certainly improves your circumstances. Every single mom can benefit and will see a dramatic improvement in her life and finances.

There are few place single moms can go for help and support. It almost seems impossible to locate resources that are easy to understand or include step-by-step details. I’ve been there and want to show you how to increase your income, get the child support you deserve, and overcome depression.
