This year on RichSingleMomma I tried to focus more on the financial side of single motherhood. It can be ugly sometimes but it doesn’t have to be a permanent state. With planning, budgeting, and a little ingenuity we can turn things around.

Sure it’s hard and it’s unfair, but to live in a state of constant fighting is not the way to get what you need. I am suggesting a better way to get your needs met.

I came across this story and almost fell off my bed (it was morning time ok). I’m thinking I would have had a stroke or at least a very different reaction than this single mom did…

Kristin Harriger’s recent electric bill was beyond shocking. Rather than a bill for $100 or so that the single mom from Abilene, Texas, was expecting, she was billed for $1,381,783.92, according to the Business Insider. “I opened it. I read it. Then just went, ‘Oh, my gosh. That’s a lot of money,” Harriger told the Abilene Reporter News. She thought it was a joke at first, and even shared photos of the bill with her friends.

After contacting her utility company, Potentia Energy, she discovered it wasn’t a joke, but a computing error. Rather than charging her the normal 9 cents per-kilowatt-hour rate, the utility charged her $1,000 per kilowatt hour. The $1,000 per-kilowatt-hour rate is far above the best offer available to her.

The Public Utility Commission of Texas website PowerToChoose.org shows that Abilene residents can get 8.2 to 12.1 cents per kilowatt hour, notes the Abilene newspaper. “I’m glad I didn’t have autopayments,” Harriger told the Business Insider. I am a big fan of Dove Moisturizing Body Wash so I’m on their mailing list for coupons. I got an email about a month ago inviting me to be a part of their Show Me Your Skin Campaign. I would be a part of the living ad. I followed the link to their website where I could upload my photo. It was pretty easy. I just had to tell what product I loved and why then enter my first name and last initial. They would let me know when my picture was on the website.

My picture would also be shown on the Dove big screen in Times Square. This was going to be interesting and exciting. They said they’d send a snapshot when my picture was displayed on the screen. It took two or three weeks for the email to arrive telling me I was seen in Times Square. I clicked the link and sure enough there I was. I was famous! I finally got my 15 min…er, 15 seconds of fame, LOL! It doesn’t matter because my beautiful skin was on display for all the world to see.

I love this campaign because it features “normal” women from all walks of life. I’m a happy camper and will continue to support Dove by buying their products. They make the ordinary woman feel extraordinary through their campaigns. The message they are sending is every woman is perfect the way they are. There is no need to feel you have to be a skinny model to be acceptable.
