Home Single Motherhood Parenting Single Mom Voices: The “S” On My Chest

Single Mother's Day flowersThe article is written by Patricia Martin as part of the Single Mom Voices series in celebration of Mother’s Day 2011. Enjoy and please comment!
Not only does the “S” on my chest stand for Supermom, it also stands for Single Mom.  I haven’t always been a single mom, not in the physical realm anyway, but I am one now.

My life as a single mom started in 2000, the year me and my now ex-husband separated.  We later divorced in 2004.  I never wanted to be a single mom, especially since I have three sons and a daughter.  But seeing that my ex-husband was never cut out to be a husband, let alone, a father, I figured I’d be doing us all a favor by eliminating the negative force within our lives.

After the initial separation, I wore my title of single mom proudly because I knew that I had sacrificed my title as wife, for the good of the children, as well as my own well being.  Being a single mom has not been easy, but the reward of knowing that my children can depend on me to make sure that their needs are met, even if their wants are put on the back burner, makes the struggle worthwhile.

As a single mom, I get to be the number one influence in my children’s lives.  With all the positive goals and achievements I’ve made in my life, my children get to witness, firsthand, how to face and overcome obstacles and challenges that may occur in their own lives, by following my exemplary example.  Single mom status isn’t for everyone, but it certainly fits me.
