Giving is not always about money but about the heart. If you will think of other valuable “assets” you have to give such as time, talent, and even things that are in good condition that you can give to someone in need you will find that you do have a surplus. Your giving will attract more things into your life.

When I was in a similar financial position as you when my daughter was young I had a friend who had just had a baby. I had plenty of clothes, toys, a bed, and other baby items I didn’t need any more but was in good condition. I gave my friend everything I had with gratitude. Soon I started receiving more, not from my friend but from other sources. I had no thought of what I would receive but only that I took pleasure in the giving.

I gave my time and talents to community organizations and I eventually got to know people who could help me get a better, higher paying job. Though I didn’t have money to give I had time, talent, and things to put into circulation. I hope this helps you understand how it works even without a surplus of money.

Since the money already has a place to go (rent, food, student loan, etc) I don’t have a surplus that I can give; I once tried giving and found myself delaying utility payments until I started getting shutoff notices.
