[Book Reivew] Unexpected Treasures

I’ve been reading a new book. It’s called Unexpected Treasures: 72 Ways to Uncover Your Hidden Wealth by Dr. Mikal Brown. The basic idea of the book is to encourage the reader to reach for more financially. The chapters are short and sweet, but it’s filled with the obvious wisdom from the man who wrote it. His tone is very kind and engaging and make you want to read on.
A couple of chapters stood out for me the most. Chapter 11– A Simple Twist to Upgrade Your Wealth told the story of a lady who had trouble balancing her checkbook. Every month for years she got it wrong. Finally she decided to round up the amount of the check to the next whole dollar amount. Using this technique she stashed away enough money each year to have a really nice Christmas.
The other chapter that really spoke to me is called The Quiet Character of a Strong Woman. Brown recounts the strong women in his life and media. He acknowledges women are the most influential parent in a child’s life. The most notable thing he says is “Most women know very well how to get up after being knocked down by hurt and disappointment”. He also made a most profound statement, “A woman who refuses to compare herself to others will never make the mistake of competing with them.” It’s hard to beat that statement and this is just a taste of what the rest of the book is about.
I am still reading over chapters again and I know I will find more treasures as I go back through.
