Guest Post – Get Your (Financial) Life Right in 2009
Today’s post comes from Tara Jefferson from The Young Mommy Life. She is an excellent writer and motivator as well as mommy to two little ones. She can relate to the single mom life because she used to be one but she is not afraid to reach back and encourage us who are still in the trenches. Her post has some very good points so pay close attention. Then go over a thank her for a great article.
Get your life right in 2009
This year has been quite a doozy.
Stock market turns to rubbish, automobile industry on the brick of collapse, jobs being slashed left and right.
If this doesn’t make you want to get your financial life in order, nothing else will.
What should be tops on your list of “Get Right Moves”? Read on…
- Determine where you want to see yourself in 2010. Do you want to work from home? Buy a home? Contribute more to your 401(k)? Write down your goals for the next year in a notebook and keep it with you. Every few months, return to it and add to the list and/or cross items off.
- Look back at your spending for 2008. Chances are, you do some (if not most) of your banking online. If you’re like me, you use your debit card for everything, meaning most of your purchases are available online already. Check and see where the holes are. Do you spend more than $30 a week on lunch? Did going to the movies twice a month eat up too much money? Knowing where you’ve spent the money in the past can help you make your game plan for 2009.
- Create a system for tracking your spending. Whether it’s investing some Quicken or Microsoft Money software or a simple binder where you keep your receipts and bills, it’s important to know where your money goes so that this time next year, you’ll be able to complete step 2 (above) with little difficulty.
- Pick up a new skill, something you can cash in on later. With the economic forecast looking gloomy for 2009 and possibly into 2010, now is a good time to work on those side hustles that Rich Single Momma is all about. Reread her side hustle posts and see if there’s one that fits you. With a small amount a time invested, you can easily make enough money to supplement your income. Extra cash is always a good thing.
So what about you, readers? What are you planning for 2009?
