Home Review Movie Rant and Review: MegaMind is a Winner!

A few days ago I took my kids to see the movie Mega Mind. My son had been bugging me for weeks to take him so I finally relented. Before I get into my review of the movie let me say a word or two about the trend in movies these days.

The 3-D fad is killing me! I mean really? Every move has to be in 3-D? Will this trend die already? I am not trying to be a sour puss but it’s really getting on my nerves! It would be okay if the 3-D effects were really apparent, but to me they aren’t. In one of the many movies previews I saw that the new Justin Beiber (did I spell that right?) movie will be in 3-D. Now that’s taking it too far.

I’m sure it’s all about money and giving people what they think they want, but with every movie being in 3-D it kind of takes away the novelty. It’s nothing new and exciting anymore (at least to me). As a single parent who has to pay for myself and the kids to see a movie the added cost of 3-D glasses to see this “special effects” movie becomes prohibitive. I’ll pass and this weekend I did pass.

MegaMind was in 3-D only at most theatres, but I found one that was not in 3-D close to my house. I saved about $10 on movie tickets for the three of us and that made me very happy. Now on to my review of MegaMind.

When I saw the previews of this movie I knew I would want to see it. First of all it was a bit absurd, the thought of a movie where the villain is the star, but then I love movies with a twist on carbon copy stories.

The story is about a misunderstood and often dejected little blue boy who just can’t get a break in life. The favored superhero gets all the brownie points and little blue boy is rejected. One day he decides become what everyone says he is anyway, a villain and the story takes off. Many parts were laugh out loud funny and others tugged at your heart.

MegaMind, genius that he is, gets a kick out of antagonizing Metro Man but a string of events jeopardizes all that. So the blue-headed wonder brain has to come up with a new way to be noticed.

There are lessons about love, being yourself, and accepting others. I give it a B+ for the funny parts, the unique twist, and lack of 3-D ;-) .
