Since becoming a single mom, I have discovered a hidden talent I never knew existed within me. It turns out I have a real knack for saving money. Not only have my friends crowned me a frugalista, but my 8 year old daughter has learned very quickly how to get the biggest bang for her buck. By watching me she has learned to be conscious about her spending habits. These kind of teachable moments with our children are priceless.
Following are some of the ways I learned to save money on everyday items after becoming a one income household.
1. Children’s Consignment Shops – I have purchased name brand, new with tags clothing for a fraction of the price. I typically buy new with tags, but many of the items are barely worn. These stores also sell shoes, books, toys, DVD’s, video games and bicycles for pennies on the dollar. Location, location, location is the key. Seek out your finds in the more affluent neighborhoods in your town.
2. Entertainment – When treating my girls to the movies, we go to the first show of the day which is normally between 9am-10am. The cost is $3 per ticket cheaper than a regular matinee. This saves me almost $10. After the movies, we walk the mall and window-shop. This cheap treat provides several hours of entertainment for us all.
These are just a few easy ways to slash your expenses on everyday items. It is amazing how creative we can become when we have to.

Yes! Since I’ve had my son I have become so creative with saving money. Thrift stores, freecycle, coupons, and the LIBRARY! Our library has free passes to local museums and zoos. Not to mention all the great books, puppets, dvds and movies.
