During this time of year in the US most people focus on the holidays and eating. Everything is very festive and the spirit of giving is at an all time high. Unfortunately there are many who do not have the extra money to have a nice spread of food. Fortunately there are organizations that help ease the burden by providing free or low-cost food baskets to those in need.

Food Pantries Blog – this website lists food banks across America. It is updated manually so be sure to check back often. The food banks are listed by state and cities. You will likely find something near you.

Angel Food Ministries (this program has closed) – Angel food ministries runs a monthly program. There is a small fee ($30) to get premium foods. The contents will feed a family of four for a week according to the website but it could last longer than that depending on your eating habits. I have purchased a regular and produce food box from them as was very satisfied with the quality of the food.

Feeding America – this organization used to be called Second Harvest. The new name does not change the mission to provide food to anyone who needs it. It is the umbrella organization for several locally run food pantries. You can search for the location nearest you using the food pantry locator on the main page.

To find more food banks do a Google search on the word “food bank”. There is a long list of state food bank associations that comes up. Do not hesitate to find a food bank to help you out if you are going through a tough time right now. Feeding you body is just as important as feeding your spirit.

Local churches – there are many local churches that are giving Thanksgiving food baskets away. You can find out which church has a program in several ways. Call the churches in your neighborhood to find out if they have a program. Look in the community section of the newspaper for announcements. Sometimes there are flyers in grocery stores or community centers.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving
